READERS

Barristers commence practice at the Bar after passing examinations and a practical advocacy course conducted by the New South Wales Bar Association and undertaking twelve months of training known as a readership. The training includes working under the guidance and supervision of one or two tutors. A tutor must be a barrister of at least seven years' standing (but barristers of 5-7 years may in certain cases be permitted to act as tutors), but not a senior counsel.

The chambers maintain accommodation for two readers. The usual period of readership is 12 months commencing at the time of the New South Wales Bar Association Practice Course.

Successful applicants for readership will read with a member of the chambers and applicants are also encouraged to read with another barrister outside the chambers. Applications for readership are usually decided well in advance of the applicant's Practice Course.

Well regarded readers will be offered licensee accommodation in the floor's annexe at the conclusion of their 12 months of reading.

Applications to read on Ninth Floor, Selborne Chambers may be directed to André Zahra, azahra@selbornechambers.com.au or our clerk, Amber Adasi.
